It's Souper Bowl Time !

I bet you thought Sun. Feb.2 was special just because they are playing the most coveted football game of the year. There is another important event happening that day. Souper Bowl of Caring is a national day to donate food to local food banks and food pantries. Churches and other organizations ask party goers to bring canned goods to be put in their favorite team's box to see who can get the most food donated. Several churches in Cedar Hill are participating that day. Kroger Food Store, Cedar Hill, has put together bags of food their customers can purchase at the register as they check out. All the food from these bags go directly to Cedar Hill Food Pantry to help feed the needy of Cedar Hill. Other grocery stores, as well as most Kroger stores, make and sale the bags. Their food goes to the North Texas Food Bank, which is great, they need the food and we can get  it with shared maintenance monies. I just feel the citizens in Cedar Hill would rather see their donation stay in their home town. Thank you store manager Mark Robinson and the local general manager that made the decision to support Cedar Hill Food Pantry.

What is better, you don't have to wait until Feb.2 to purchase your bag. They are on sale now at the Kroger Store, 1382, Cedar Hill, TX 75104.  If you can not purchase a bag you are welcome to made a donation at the check out. Every $1 will allow us to furnish three meals.

Taking a big bite

Big News! Sharing the Bread Cedar Hill Food Pantry is so proud to have been awarded a land acquisition grant of $100,000 through the Community Foundation of North Texas to cover the purchase of a plot of land on Clark Road in Cedar Hill. Hopes are to establish a 12,000-square food building to house both New2You Thrift Store and Cedar Hill Food Pantry. A six-month capital campaign plan should start  by the end of the first quarter to fund the building.  It is estimated the new building will cost about $700,000 to $900,000.

2013 In Review

What a year we had in 2013 ! We served a whopping 858 "unique families" made up of 2167 "unique individuals". Unique meaning counted only once. Unlike many agencies, our clients may come in four times a month to receive food for a period of 6 months. When you look at the whole picture we furnished $542.256 worth of food to 2167 individuals during the year. Beside food Cedar Hill Food Pantry is partnered with TXU Energy Aid that helped 361 families with $107,633.48 toward their electric bill. All this is accomplished without funding from City, State or Federal sources.

Even though the number of families needing food assistance has grown, Cedar Hill and the surrounding community continue to meet the demand. Again this year Thanksgiving meals including the turkey and trimmings were provided by Trinity Church and School. First Baptist Church provided the "fixings" for the Christmas meals. The Pantry was able to purchase hams to accompany the Christmas meal. We have close working relationship with local businesses that provide products. Krogers, Target and WalMart have been donation baked goods and slightly damaged items daily for several years. recently, sprouts makes a daily donation of vegetables, fruits, bread and some meat products. You would have to be present to witness how much our clients, whom we call neighbors, appreciate these additional nutritious items.

Through the year the Pantry was blessed with food and monetary donations from our faithful donors. Our fundraisers were in August when we held the "Fashion with Flair" luncheon and style show. On September 19 we participated in the O
ne Day of Giving through the Dallas Morning News. We were added as a charity in the Dallas Morning News Charities to receive portions of their yearly giving program. All of these efforts have sustained the supply of food throughout the year and have helped us meet our rising operational cost. We have been recipient of numerous food drives from schools, organizations, neighborhood homeowner groups, businesses and individuals. We have learned over our 24 years of operations that it truly does tke a village to feed our needy. There is no better village than the citizens that make up the City of Cedar Hill.

When approached for a donation for a non-profit organization, one wants to know who specifically benefits from their donation and what percent of the donation will go toward the cause. Our donors should know that only nine percent of our budget is used for compensation. We have five part-time employees and one contract driver. the rest of the work is done by our 57 volunteers that put in an average of 696 hours every month.
