Gene's Corner

Ahh, spring is here! The sunshine lifts our spirits, trees and flowers are blooming, and to many it brings the joy of an affordable utility bill. The "Souper Bowl of caring" early in February was a FANTASTIC success. Congregations in many area churches and Kroger customers contributed a total of 1660 items and Trinity Christian School donated 2212 items. The Boy Scouts launched their Annual Scouting for Food Drive on February 16. From your curbs and doorsteps they picked up 3,052 items of food. We commend the Boy Scouts and their leaders for feeding their neighbors living in hunger. We are happy our shelves are well stocked with canned goods and this will give us a cushion for the next few months. We continue to purchase meat and other products from the North Texas food Bank.

With our food supply covered at the moment our big concern is the need for a 3/4 ton pick-up truck within the year. A grant will be submitted in April to the North Texas Food bank for funds up to $10,000. The estimated cost of a used truck is in the neighborhood of $20,000. At present, we have a contract with a part-time employee for food pick-ups at the North Texas Food Bank , Target and Wal-Mart. He is using his own truck and is concerned with the 'wear and tear' on his vehicle. We need to raise funds for the balance of the truck before January 2012. We will include the fact that we are actively trying to secure matching funds. We are in hopes we will be more likely to receive the grant if we have the matching funds. If the cost of the truck is not met, the cost must come from the Operating Budget. Due to the poor economy, donations have decreased in the past two years. a truck is our number one priority at this time. any donation earmarked for the purchase of a truck will be earnestly appreciated.
